Soul Train Music Awards 1999
Tribute To Luther Vandross
El DeBarge, Johnny Gill, Kenny Lattimore
” Never Too much “
” Don’t Want To Be A Fool “
” Wait For Love “
Whitney Houston 4:44. 5:07. 6:31
” So Amazing “
Johnny Gill .. 3:28 …. Whoa !
All these talented singers floating around, bewildering that we have no
song writers ?
If music is a reflection of the human spirit, we might assume that we are
at an all time low, just a thought….
invest a bit of time in this video and you are blessed with some special
moments….Johnny’s power…El’s understated grace and melody…Kenny is so
underrated…and Whitney is well what we all fell in love with so many
years ago now…
This was about 3 years before Ruben Studdard was discovered, courtesy of
American Idol. He would’ve been a great addition to this medley because his
singing voice is almost identical to Luther Vandross’. In fact, Luther was
one of Ruben’s idols and favorite singers. Luther actually admired Ruben.
Ruben even sang at Luther’s funeral.
I’m not trying to throw shade to these brothers, but when Whitney comes in
singing there is a big difference in the show. She makes Luther’s song her
owned, and takes it to another lever. What a precious jewel we have lost.
aw this makes me smile and then cry , seeing luther smilling and enjoying
the atists paying tribute and whitney sounding amazing , two iconic
legendary singers taken far too young
I think the year 1999/2000 was when Whitney gave her last best
performances…she was still on her A game…after 2000 is when she showed
up on the BET Awards and the MJ Tribute concert really thin. Her voice
became really husky and hoarse at that time and from 2001-2010 her voice
was unpredictable. She would have moments of brilliance where her voice
shined in the condition it was in and then some not so good moments. But
nonetheless. She is and will always be THE GREATEST VOCALIST in the history
of female vocalist. When she was at her best NOBODY could touch her! NO
ONE!!!!
This 80’s and 90’s generations of talented superstars are the last dying
breed of talented people . Where did they all go as the guy said blow me
thank you mom for having me and this generation last generation I’ve truly
talented people. A amazing, beautiful era gone by. We”ll never see talent
that awesome again l fear sadly.
Man oh man, Kenny Latimore, such richness to that there voice of his. And
DAMN! Love Johnny on that 3rd cut. . . This was just too short. El
DeBarge, never a favorite, but he did all right.
I had the great joy of seeing Luther on his ANY LOVE tour at Madison Square
Garden…with Anita Baker opening. wow! It was so phenomenal and the
cleanest sound I’ve ever heard at a concert…especially a large cavern
like the Garden. Gregory Hines duetted on the song from WHITE NIGHTS.
Terrific performance here by Whitney.
oooooooooooooo wait for love ,my favorite song
I’m glad Luther enjoyed this so
JOHNNY LOOKED A LITTLE GAY A BIT WHEN EL STARTED SINGING. BLESS HIS HEART
Johnny Gill .. 3:28 …. Whoa !

Whitney Houston spoiled the performance :)
Whitney, Johnny, Kenny then El. Beautiful performance!
That was a beautiful salute to Luther.
I swear Johnny could be Luther’s son, brother, cousin…something! Seeing
both Luther & Whitney, it’s hard to watch w/out tearing up!
