Hilarious-man Mike Epps, hung out with us today on Sway in the Morning and opened up to us about a lot!

Talking to us about his new AOL series, That’s Racist, Mike weighs in on Geraldo Rivera’s opinion that “hip-hop killed black kids.” He also opened up about the problem with writers in comedy.

Last time Aries Spears was in-studio with us, he gave us his honest thoughts about Kevin Hart — and so did Epps. Comparing him to Kim Kardashian, and how his social media following has helped boosted his talent to a new level.

If you haven’t heard, Mike Epps is playing the lead role in the new Lee Daniels-directed film about Richard Pryor — and Mike scored the big role! He candidly tells us how nervous he is, and how he hopes this movie will open the casting for other greats like, Kevin Hart, Cedric the Entertainer, Taraji P. Henson and more.

Dontay Andrews says:

Did the video really just glitch when sway pulled out the chicken? Lol must
be some good chicken

E.B jombo says:

I don’t give a damn how all these comedians try to justify it,it all sounds
like hate to me! Cause at the end of the day we all know it takes talent
and hard work to do and be where he’s at right now!

Codey Baker says:

Some of yall still feel that Mike Epps is hating or jealous. But the facts
remains, Kevin Hart relies on over the top personalities to be funny in his
films. He’ll never have a DayDay like Epps in Friday or Smokey, a Axel
Foley like Eddie Murphy in Beverly Hills Cop, a Earl like Martin in
National Security, a Carter like Chris Tucker in Rush Hour, a Reggie like
Epps in All About The Benjamins and lets not even mention Eddie Murphy in
the Nutty Professor! Kevin will never portray such prolific, multi
dimensional characters. He gets by off of being popular and loud on screen.
Kevin may have more movies, popularity nd money than Mike Epps but Epps has
DayDay, an absolutely classic and timeless character and he’s about to
portray Richard Pryor. And lets not even mention Jamie Foxx nd Will Smith
playing Ray Charles nd Muhammad Ali. Great Comedians. You can’t disagree
with me.

Moneyminty says:

Am I the only one that the video was fuckin up at 7:58 ?

KontryBoy706 says:

This was a real good interview. Respect to Epps

PERRY DAEZIOUH says:

After Dave Chappelle. Who is the funniest, ” Black ” comedian out right now
? The answer is no one. There isn’t someone who shines. I believe they, as
in ” The industry ” picks a black comedian and catapults them to super
stardom to showcase that they are given everyone a fair share. People don’t
care about ” real ” talent anymore. They only care about how many people
are following you. When people express strong opinions about their craft.
It’s not hating, it’s passion for the work they put in and the work others
before them put in. Kevin is funny, just not to the degree of the legends
who he has been put on the same pedestal with.

ChronicTha' Hemphog says:

Kevin is not even fuckin funny to me. like, AT ALLL!!! he definitely tries
way too hard to be funnyI LOVE YOU MIKE!! i aint down wit the 100million
FAKE ASS PEOPLE!!! lol

Jerome Beck says:

there’s a thin line between the raw truth and hating…..

Calvin Estes says:

Yo, Mike spittin’ that real. Especially with fake, non-talented people
havin’ fake followers. And the only reason why they get on and stay on is
because fake people can relate. That’s real talk. I know he’s referring to
comedy, but look at music as well. Music is fuckin’ horrible these days yet
it’s poppin’. Why? Because of social media following non talented people
being silly. Wack people like Souljah Boy being stupid on you tube, silly
people like young thug trollin’ ya’ll wearin’ dresses and shit got people
followin’ that shit and makin’ them famous. That’s what’s happenin’. While
real talented folks can’t get in because the spots are being filled by
these clowns.

Grind University says:

Check sway shirt some real Detroit shit Detroit Vs Everybody

CaliCool91 says:

Whenever something goes mainstream people are quick to call it wack.
Chapelle would’ve had the exact same problem if he stuck around long enough
during the Chapelle Show years. When you retire in your prime like Barry
Sanders people make you a legend and you don’t receive the full range of
hate. Kevin Hart was HILARIOUS when his first stand up came out and
everybody knew it. Now that he’s working hard and putting out a movie every
month people want to act like he was NEVER funny? Stop it….

Jumbotron says:

There must be something up if all these comedians keep going at Kevin Hart.
I’m not buying the “they’re just jealous” excuse because even when Dave
Chappelle was buzzing, nobody ever came at him the way they’re coming at
Kevin.

thekid26000 says:

I’m disappointed at Mike’s comments about Kevin, Why do we feel that we
have to put other peoples lights out in order for ours to shine? He
doesn’t like that Kevin uses social media to promote himself but Mike also
has a twitter page! I love Mike Epps and wish he could get over this thing
he has with Kevin because it isn’t warranted! The world is forever changing
and social media is a big part of the change! Props to Kevin Hart!

MISSDAJAVU22 says:

Mike Epps is the shit! Even though he spent most of the interview going in
on K Hart none of it was lies… And Mike already addressed the your a
hater comments, and I agree 100,000,000,000%

Swisher Price says:

Kevin hart is overrated..but he is trending on “social media” lol thats all
it is

Roshel Shields says:

No one is hating . Kevin Hart is just not funny

TriL TV says:

Does SWAY ever take that Hat off? #Pew
And Eddie Murphy need another HBO Stand Up or something!!!!!

jim j says:

When you looked at guys like Eddie Murphy on SNL and in movies you knew why
he was a star. When you saw Chris Rock perform his HBO specials you knew
why he was a star. When you watched Dave Chapelle or Martin Lawrence on
their shows you knew why they were stars.

Those guys all had tremendous comedic talent, even Katt Williams had
bigtime talent. With Kevin Hart it just seems like he must have kissed
enough ass and smiled enough to get people to overlook how mediocre he is.

Vontae Luster says:

All these people are saying this about Hart because as a culture we I feel
like we dont accept wack shit. At least not the old school. Everybody who
was at the top deserved it back in the 80s 90s. No one was more bad than
Eddi. No one was messin with Martin Lawrence because they were talented and
deserved it. I dont feel like anything was socially given to them like how
we’re doing with Kevin Hart. As a black comedian he didnt talk about race
which is refreshing but instantly he’s crowned as the greatest. He’s not
the funniest right now and thats why people have been going at him. People
dont feel like he deserves it but has been given the title. Nobody said
this about Chappelle because he was the king in the 2000s. Nobody was
messin with him. So i think as a culture if you rightfully deserve
something people will agree but when you are just given a title and you
really aren’t deserving of it people will have a problem. Kevin Hart is the
Drake of comedy you can’t deny his work ethic but there’s really nothing
special about them and white people love them

chilimac24 says:

Mike epps is about to play Richard Pryor in a movie…he ain’t jealous

Jae Crawford says:

Ok so the question is: If it were not for hip hop would black people be
better off? Would not having hip hop give us better communities, schools,
job opportunities, less violence, better families? Because last time I
checked we weren’t doing to well before hip hop. If not for hip hop there
would still be negative images and commentary of black people through film,
sitcoms and other genres of music because negative images and commentary of
blacks SELLS to white people. So if it wasn’t hip hop (really its
commercial rap) there would still be some other form of entertainment and
music that shows black culture in it’s worst state because that is the
political agenda of the owners of all the major media outlets and because
white people buying it in droves. And can we please stop confusing
commercial rap with hip hop, because they are not the same. If you don’t
know what real hip hop is then you are part of the problem

Savon Moreland says:

That whole rap argument goes both ways tbh on one hand you got niggas like
Lupe telling people to be better and on the other hand you have niggas like
Chief Keef who perpetuate the bullshit in the game and make people think
being a drug dealer and being violent is an effective method of surviving.
Not to mention perpetuating stereotypes which lead to all black people
being profiled and what not.

tvar doasair says:

The reason why Mike Epps and and Aries spears HATE on Kevin Hart because
they never though he would of made it as far or as big. Understand Epps and
Spears paved the way for Hart and he has nothing but love and respect for
them. But these two bitter clowns are the worst, they project their failure
because that they had the spotlight and in dimmed. Now they are bitter smh

Taylor Giavasis says:

I’m neutral regarding whether hip hop killed back kids or saved. I think it
did both. So many rappers now days who do nothing but talk about violence
in each of their songs, and teenagers look up to this kind of music. The
same teenagers who went to jail for catching a body about a week ago (Lyric
reference). But then there’s uplifting rap songs that inspire us to move
forward in life in a positive way. Some rappers feel the need to talk about
the drug game as if their the reason it exist. Talk about how being
involved in selling drugs can ruin a life and how one can move on from it,
despite it being hard b/c one has to provide for his or her’s family.

Ask Nathaniel says:

Great interview ..the best Mike Epps interview i seen yet

Chik FromMtl says:

mike epps sounds ignorant,… with that money, get some education

Gail White says:

I am not buying Mike Epps claiming Kevin Hart is huge because of other
people’s TAG LINES because…Kevin is Funny to me because of his Silly
Personality…and him talking about himself…his friends and his family.
Kevin is just a Smart Business Man…and Social Media helped him to gain
more fans…because people “looked” for Kevin to follow!

Bruce L33 Roy says:

” Corny niggas always b the kingpin” lol Hes not even tryin, but Mike Epps
was just expressing HIS OPINION and still came up with some potential stand
up material with that comment. This is a real comedian at work yall, who
doesnt have to resort to theatrics just to get a mild laugh out of us.
Kevin is straight but Mike Epps is 10x funnier than Kev to me.

poet253rd says:

Kevin Hart is funny but he is only a big star because he is everywhere you
turn. A new movie every 6 months, on TV every week and doing things like
the NBA celebrity all star game. Just because he is on everything doesn’t
mean he is the best. There just isn’t much else out there in the way of
comedy besides Kevin Hart. If Dave Chapelle and Kevin Hart dropped a movie,
a TV show and did a live show at the same time as each other, Chapelle is
going to beat out Hart. Why? Because the comedy fans know that Chapelle is
one of the greats. He didn’t need to be on TV every few hours to be the
best. Hart is funny but he isn’t a legend like he thinks he is. He isn’t on
the level of guys like Eddie Murphy.

jasmine hayes says:

I enjoyed this interview. Mike Epps is one of my favorite comedians.
Stomach hurting laughter from him. no shade but I have yet to get that
laughter from watching Kevin Hart. I grew up on that Martin era. Which made
me appreciate the greats like Eddie Murphy and Richard Pryor. Comedians
that have and still make me cry from laughing so much.

Chris Jolie says:

It’s funny that mike has a lot of white in his blood but he talks like he’s
fully black

MEGA .MEL says:

MIKE ACTING LIKE HE LIVES IN A DIFFERENT ERA AND THAT HE DOESN’T HAVE
ACCESS TO SOCIAL MEDIA…FOH..HE JUST HATING..HE TALKED NEARLY HALF OF THE
INTERVIEW ABOUT KEVIN HART

john doe says:

Here is my 2¢
If the comedian/entertainment industry were the rap game you’d all see
Mike’s point.
If you got paid for material, skill, originality, body
language,delivery,relevance,punchlines with a Lil edginess/controversy and
personal pov. Then ppl like fabolous, styles p, jadakiss Joe Buddens would
be on top of the game and stay there. And less talented/basic/word rhymers
like rich homie, young thug and any other simple metaphor baby punchline
rappers who make little to no sense with wack delivery simple vocabulary
who struggle with timing and make too many eras pronouncing and forcing
words to rhyme should have no place past an amateur in the game. If u
missed the point that means you support corny b.s. and like anything that’s
forced/marketed in ur direction.. vanilla ice sold records that doesn’t
mean he was that talented.. If you took time to read all of this check out
fabulous latest project that is real rap it’s time to boycott the bullshit.
The sad thing is Fabulous should have no problem selling records if it’s
based on skill set art form and delivery.. THE PROBLEM IS THIS IS THE
CENTURY OF THE SHEEPLE!

forfoxacheman says:

The difference is that each generation has the “funny guy” and Mike Epps
was never that guy. Let’s explain

1970s Richard Pryor
1980s Eddie Murphy
1990s Chris Rock/ Chris Tucker
2000s Dave Chappelle
2010s Kevin Hart

Unfortunately for Mike Epps he just isn’t this generations funny man.
Although I would say Epps is the better actor, Hart is the better comedian
and he relates to the NOW whereas Epps is more of an old school comedian.

Yes Hart can be annoying and repetitive and realistically should thank God
that Chappelle doesn’t do major stand up anymore BUT, Hart must be doing
something right

alvin rozon says:

Mike Epps sound like a straight up dinosaur. Adapt homie or go away. Thats
the way of the world.

2010cmarie says:

Kevin is corny and he ain’t funny. Mike got me in tears talking about the
hoe in church! Lolol

LakersDynasty42 says:

I personally don’t find Kevin Hart to be that funny in movies. I thought a
few of his standups were good but the last one was weak. Mike sounds bitter
to me though. Not because he’s going at Kevin Hart but because he’s also
gone at Chris Rock AND Dave Chappelle. Two of the greatest standups ever.
If Rock wanted to include him in the Top Five movie he would’ve jumped at
it. Because he wasn’t (and possibly because Kevin Hart was in it) he said
no one in it was actually a funny comedian. Then he compares Kevin Hart to
a “corny ass” drug dealer from his neighborhood who’s running the block
that every wanted to rob. What more do you need? I can respect his opinion
even if I disagree but to use a metaphor like that and claim you’re still
not jealous is unbelievable.

If Mike Epps gets critical acclaim for this upcoming Pryor biopic
(seriously doubt it but I hope he proves me wrong) how would he like it if
another comedian talked about him not deserving his spot? Work on your
craft and stop worrying about someone else.

TommyJohn_ says:

huh… didn’t know Mike Epps was still relevant. Dude is a brutal actor..
On the same level as Sinbad.

Rio Rogers says:

“everybody wanna rob him, but can’t catch his ass” LOL

frank ponds says:

I get what Epps is saying about Twitter and people follwoing untalented
people because of their works but, comedy..especially stand up…isn’t
music or even tv&Film. You can’t hide your lack of skill with audio
tweaking and nice beats. Or, like most youtube comedians do, hide their bad
comedy timing with scene cuts. You have to have some sort of skill to
acquire those followers. The movies didn’t come until after a certain level
of success.

Ra Gray says:

All these flavors and you choose to be salty. Ol hating nigga..

Trent Worley says:

damn chick in the black hoodie look like Dr.Cornell West

djwarzone1 says:

Man I can see Mike practicing his Pryor right there when he was talking. Im
sure that’s what the fro is about. It has to be an honor to do that

nick cross says:

o and btw ,,Epps/Hart fans overhere….. you know he just called you
guys, fake MFers hea>> and also..he is about social media and internet is
shit blabla…but he is sitting in a fucking room..talking his ass
away..while he is on the internet at the spot..fucking idiot

DoktorSick says:

People can say what they want about kevin but he’s making movies and making
money. Plus he’s giving his name drawing power . Instead of miking hating
on kevin he should have been more focused on promoting his role in the
richard pryor movie. He needs to call kevin privately and ask how to better
market himself.

Mark Perry says:

Damn, my dude was serious with it. I dunno, a lot of it sounds like hating
but who knows unless you’re IN that industry.

Mick Joseph says:

I cant wait to see him do the Richard Prior Biopic.. And to be honest I’m a
white dude and I eat chicken every day, love dat shit. All races have there
own problems. We just all gotta try and live together.

HelloKittyGOODIES says:

Mike epps
Is real talent

SMP2390 says:

Mike Epps is too old school man I mean think about it like this you making
the Richard Pryor and you gonna have a trailer out when it’s done you know
how many FB and twitter mugs gonna be posting that shit social media has
it’s perks at times it’s just how you use it. Cats like Aries and Mike
talented but they know it’s a whole different hustle now then in the 90’s
and 2000’s.

Bayz Izreal says:

LMAO @ Chuckie Ducky
