I was watching Soul Train when I was just a little girl. The 70s were the
good old days, good clean fun people were decent back then, helping one
another we went to church because it was the right thing to do not for a a
show. I do miss the good old days. Those old folks from that era believed
in being up standing no matter what!!
Notice how everyone is dressed – how all of these BLACK PEOPLE are dress up
in the club? Everyone is dressed up!!! The men are all wearing suits and
polished shoes and trousers and collared shirts. The women are all
COVERED, and nobody is showing any boobs and/or butts. Nobody is grinding
on anybody or dancing nasty.
It’s just black folks showing off the latest fashions (for that time) and
dance moves on a show that showcased the latest popular music – which is
what made that Soul Train so popular. No beef. No drama. Nobody acting
stupid.
Pardon my naivete, but just wondered what it meant when you were a dude
with your shirt tied up at the bottom back then. I have an idea but want
confirmation.
I too have noticed how fit and in shape everyone is. It inspires my 47
year old self to keep fighting the good fight and keep in shape. I
appreciate that everyone is covered up but you can still tell that everyone
is in good shape. Non of the dance moves is embarassing to watch ( except
the guy in the tan suit-the “slap happy” move?- I’m surprised that got past
the censors! Must see tv on Saturday mornings helping mom clean the house.
I am from the “have your fun on Saturday night , but your butt better be
in church” on Sunday mornings.
Every time I watch these old Soul Train videos I’m always struck by how
incredibly slim the dancers are. Of course, they are young and physically
active but you have to wonder about the obesity rates then and compare them
to now. What changed? Yes, the level of physical activity decreased but
what role did the quality of food play. Just wondering?
Great song . The music at that time was not completely taken over by
corporate scene . Now , the garage ,basement , and street music is the soul
music “of the free people . The corporations have not destroyed the street
level music yet . The doo wop never stop!” The guitar or keyboard can be on
any street corner , and sing their songs as good as they want . FREEDOM.
Wow, this line actually has some of my favorite ST dancers. The lockers,
Pat, Tyrone, the couple at 0.12 (I forget her name). These vid’s greatly
increase my happiness level :}
Kinda sad when the best dancing is from unknown people on Soul Train rather
than professionals on Dancing on the Stars. Gud luck to Gladys Knight on
Dancing with the Stars.
Really! They don’t have a fraction of this excitement and groove EXCEPT for
Donald Driver’s win last year. Here on YouTube, see: Donald Driver
Freestyle. Then, back in Jazz era, this video: Hellzapoppin Swing Dance
Scene (5:04). Nobody matches black dance.

It’s interesting to see the beginnings of what we would call break dancing
in the ’80’s.
