Hey, hey
Love, love
Yeah, yeah
Ah, ha
Freddies dead
That’s what I said
Let the rap a plan
Said he’d see him home
But his hope was a rope
And he should’ve known
It’s hard to understand
That there’s love in this man
I’m sure all would agree
That his misery was his
Woman and things
Now Freddie’s dead
That’s what I said
Everybody’s misused him
Ripped him up and abused him
Another junkie plan
Pushin’ dope for the man
A terrible blow
But that’s how it goes
A freddies on the corner now
If you wanna be a junkie, wow
Remember freddies dead
We’re all built up with progress
But sometimes I must confess
We can deal with rockets and dreams
But reality, what does it mean
Ain’t nothing said
‘Cause freddies dead
Hey, hey
Love, love
Hey, hey
Yeah, yeah
Ha, ha
Love, love
Yeah, yeah
Ha, ha
Yeah, yeah
Freddies dead
All I want is some peace of mind
With a little love I’m trying to find
This could be such a beautiful world
With a wonderful girl
Why I need a woman child
Don’t wanna be like freddie now
‘Cause freddies dead
Hey, hey
Yeah, yeah
If you don’t try
You’re gonna die
Why can’t we brothers
Protect one another
No one’s serious
And it makes me furious
Don’t be misled
Just think of Fred
Everybody’s misused him
Ripped him up and abused him
Another junkie plan
Pushin’ dope for the man
A freddies on the corner now
If you wanna be a junkie, why
Remember freddies dead
Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha

Curtis Mayfield… A genius! A great composer and singer…. one of the
best of all time.
Central to the second wave of Contemporary Classic Popular Music at the end
of the Twentieth Century @KCS 1986.
Not sure who did it first… mixing groove-based soul with orchestra
strings, horns etc. Guess it became popular in the early 70s (Barry White,
Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield…). Still sounds good to me.
@ProlificDecibal Mr. Mayfield and several other older artist have helped to
make music as it is today. I just dont feel that as many put thier all into
it as back in the days. Then they where truely singing now they have
computers to inhance the voice, and I am not saying no one can sing in
todays artist because many have raw talent. :-)) Thanks for your response,
take care
Buy buy buy this album if you never visited or lived in NYC in the 70s. Buy
it also to remind you how raw, creative, exciting, beautiful, ugly and
dangerous it could be if you had a bite of the Big Apple then.
I was in High School when Curtis scored this soundtrack. And to this day: A
Freddie’s On A Corner Now, If You Wanna Be A Junkie WOW!!! Yea, this is
real Music.
@sweetness4664 they don’t make em like Curtis but Curtis still inspires new
artists and is helping the soul of the music to evolve further from where
he is. Thank you Curtis!
Unfortunately, the social relevance of this song still holds true today. As
for the Bieber lovers (the 3 dislikes) …let’s face it, today’s generation
doesn’t know what MUSIC is…Sad but true.
The male singers of today: Trey Songz; Ne-Yo; Chris Brown; etc., they
couldn’t stand on the stage next to the likes of Curtis; Marvin; Teddy; Al;
etc. Those guys are so tough you don’t even have to mention their last
names and people know exactly who you’re talking about. Nowadays, any fool
that can jump around on stage in front of a bunch of pyrotechnics and
theatrics, these young folks break their necks to get their CDs.
