uncle Phil was the perfect example of what a real man should be in society
today especially in this episode. He protects Will from this scumbag dad of
his and served as a voice of reason for the whole family when the rest of
them were ignorant then instead of forcing will to do what he said he let
Will make his own mistakes and grow and realize the truth on his own then
was a caring and loving shoulder to cry on when things went bad.

blow it off.

This kinda hits hard for me because growing up I never had a grandpa, or an
uncle, or an aunt. My mom had family but they never really talked to us
that much, my dads family was small, VERY small. Ever since I was born my
dad was there but it was almost like he wasnt. He was only home for about 2
hours a whole week, I always thought my dad was out doing great things,
working his butt off for his family. Then I turned 7 and I started to
realize my father was a no good drunk who hung out with friends, raced
cara, hung out with woman, and drank his money away while his son sat home
with his bipolar wife. Tell me man, what is that? Just like Will, I taught
myself how to play ball, I learned to tie my shoes by myself, I learned how
to be a man by myself, I learned everything by myself. Now I’m older and my
dads getting old and staying home more. He don’t know how old I am, he gets
my name wrong even though I’m named after him, he ain’t even been to any of
my football or basketball games, ever! Since I started the sport! Honestly
guys what’s worse than having a father who left you before you knew him was
knowing you have a father, but him not wanting to know you.
I can relate to this alot i never had a father growing up it sucks and
after 24 years of my life i finally get to see his picture and still mad at
the fact that i would NEVER experience a father son bond. If i have kids i
wont make the same mistakes my “father” did
This scene was scripted. This whole episode was scripted. Will Smith is
just a tremendous actor. Stop believing in social media.
Am I the only one who thinks the untrue “this scene was unplanned and Will
Smith had a legitimate breakdown because of his own father leaving him as a
kid” rumor is insulting on multiple levels? It assumes less of the writers
who wrote the scene, Will Smith’s father who apparently has a great
relationship with his son, and Will Smith himself as a fantastic actor
capable of faking emotions like good actors do.
That last line gets me every time
What I like is how just before he leaves, Will’s dad says “It was great
seeing you, son.” to which Will responds “You too, Lou.” showing that he
isn’t letting his dad leave with the satisfaction of a heartbroken son.
Obviously, Will is crushed, but he doesn’t want to show his asshole dad
that, so he responds to him as though he was someone he barely knew; he
wants his dad to know that it’s over and that he’s not worth being sad
over.

This hits me ridiculously hard cuz my dad did the exact same thing to me
when i 5. Told me straight to my face he didn’t want anything to do with
me. Its something a person never really gets over.
This is like watching that scene in the iron giant where he flies up and
kills himself to save everyone, i try so hard not to cry but it’s next to
impossible.
Will’s outrage wasn’t scripted. That was reflecting on his actual life.

foreal and wen he lost it on set the crew just kept tha cameras rollin cus
it wus such a powerful scene.. thats wud explain why it felt so real, the
best acting comes from actors who acually been threw it

I can relate to this scene, these emotions.. I can literally cry the same
tears.. I know the feeling he feels.
Will had a pretty amazing childhood. Traveled with his mother, father and
siblings around the states a lot. Look up his segment in “Inside The Actor
Studio”.
This scene shows how talented Will is as an actor.

The sad part is that in the script he was suppose to just blow it off but
in real life will smiths dad really left him and the cry was real and so
was the hug from uncle Phil
See the thing is this isnt a show casing of his acting, this is his actual
emotions, when will was young his dad left him, and put that whole
experience into that scene. its one of the most genuine scenes of acting of
all time
This was actually real. I don’t know if anyone knows that. Will Smith was
actually upset because his dad left. When he said, “How come he don’t want
me.” He wasn’t supposed to say that and start crying. And Uncle Phil’s
reaction was real too.

Watching this brought back so many memories of staying up late at night.
This show had some of the best writing and acting in any sitcom ever. One
of my top 3 favorites ever. Others being Roseanne and Good Times.
As a side note… Will was not acting. This was not in the script. He was
truly that emotional, because of his real life experiences. They kept the
scene.

As a kid that grew up without a dad, this hit me hard. Will Smith always
does an awesome job.
I cry every time he breaks down, but not because my father left me and my
mom before I was even born (I didn’t even know him so I have no reason to
be upset), but because Will is such a powerful actor, Uncle Phil definitely
made me cry because of how much support he was showing him and the whole
show in general was definitely one of the best on TV.
U Wiil Smith actually grew up with dad that gave him up I feel his pain my
dad gave me up to my mom but I’m doing just fine without him
The defining moment in Will Smith’s career if you ask me. This is some of
the best acting I have ever seen on television.

When Will started crying it was because his dad did actually run out on
him. Uncle Phil realized this was real for him and thats why he moved so
quick to comfort him. This is where it got really hard for Will because
this is one of those times that his career and personal life clashed.
When I was 1, my mom walked out on me, and haven’t gotten a call from her
since I was 3. I feel every bit of pain Will feels.
The part where Will yells, “To hell with him!” Is so powerful.
