yeah Rick and the SCB need to be on the next ballot for the R&R HOF.. its
been long overdue. he was a brilliant songwriter, and a major hitmaker for
Motown.
Happy Birthday to the only other person to have walked this Earth, & who i
call my hero & idol (the other person being my other hero & idol STEVIE
WONDER ), Happy Birthday King of Punk Funk “RICK JAMES” !! I miss you .
I never cease to be amazed at just how musically tight Rick James’ bands
were. ( recordings) Some people knocked disco back then but there was some
very serious talent in these outfits. Fun and cool lyrics on this one too.
let prince take videos off the internet. we get to see rick james, who is
much better, m jackson, earth wind and fire etc. prince u suck, act wholly
then thou, yr shit does stink, keep yr music, no one wants it anyway. who
will buy it now. well at least the young ones will see where the real funk
came from and rick james was #1 funk punk, prince will be 4gotten.
oh it seems “The Time ” with Morris Day copied him, very tightly…did ot
know that. You notice Rick James never called Morris day and he time out or
prince who produced for coping his stuff…..wow go ahead Rick you were a
strong artist to let that go!
Hi, Do you happen to have this entire episode? I’m trying to find out the
name of a partifcular funk song people were dancing to (was in the barber
shop when it was played and didn’t get the name of the song)…Not refering
to the nick & ashford song or the sos band songs.
Yes, I’m familiar with the word. You have heard of ‘typos’? The only thing
“laughable”, is the whole debate. People act as though there’s no room for
more than one talent. If Rick James’ talent wasn’t comparable to Prince’s,
no one would even put them in the same sentence. Rick James wasn’t a
dancer, but so what? They are both very talented individuals in their own
rights. But, I still believe that Rick James could have been bigger than he
was, if he hadn’t been consumed by drug use.
@1980Triumph – I think he and Prince were equally talented, but Prince is
probably more successful only because he kept himself clean. Rick James
should have become a Quincy Jones in the entertainment industry.
Unfortunately, he tried to live true to his songs that coke took him down,
messed up his heart, and then took him out. But still, he’ll always be one
of my favorite performers.
You’re certainly entitled to your opinion, but it’s a little presumtuous to
believe it should be the arbitor for who’s more talented. After all, it’s
only a matter of preference for one style over another.
man he was just coming off the “fire it up tour” with prince as his opening
act. this 1980 “garden of love” album was considered a flop, i got the cd
it’s actually pretty good! just a tad bit too many slow jams. summer love
in particular is one of my favorites
It depends on the measures taken. It is not (the word is presumptuous, by
the way) for me because I look at songwriting, musicianship, singing, live
performance (dancing, singing, and playing), and production to gain some
measure. I see Prince as superior on all counts. Of course, it is
subjective to a point and opinion does factor in. I just dont see it as the
only determinant of talent.
Hey, I have an important question. Does anybody know if Leroy Burgess
collaborated with Rick James on this song. Rick’s sound on this cut is more
like Leroy Burgess than a funky Rick James sound.
It’s a hard call to say who was doing what first.Even in the book Rick
James says he liked Prince because their style was similar. He never said
Prince copyed that. He did say Prince would still some of his stage show
when they toured together. Hell…they both copy a little from Sly! There
is nothing new under the sun right?
@talkischeapor not sure he did! He called out Prince many times. Get Rick
James book confessions of a superfreak. There is a whole chapter about his
beef with Prince.
Sure Rick probably could have been better if he stayed off drugs and out of
jail – but that wasnt the question. I can not be counted among these people
that you reference as I appreciate the talents of Prince and Rick James. I
simply pointed out the talents that I saw in both and cited the fact that
Prince has more of those talents than Rick had. Perhaps one more talent
Prince has is clean living – he hardly looks or sounds his age. Yes – who
knows if Rick was able to do that.
I love it!!! Only my man could keep the crowd “fired up” like that after
the song ended! I sure do miss Rick, and now Teena. Thank you so much for
posting, Asmithsacto.
I remember the 80s rick was jamming I think about prince he didn’t really
get the attention untin after purple rain
FATHER OF FUNK……….
The Original. Beyond Brilliant.
yeah Rick and the SCB need to be on the next ballot for the R&R HOF.. its

I love you Rick!
The Stone City Band was very underrated. Rick had a great ensemble with
those guys. Great song.
R.I.P. Rick James
