I’m sorry, Damita is good but this should’ve have DEFINITELY went to Pat
and Gary. They had way more variety in their moves, they used the floor and
the space more, and Pat even hit the half-scorpion at 2:06! Showed way more
creativity and flexibility than the others.
I think Damita was a favorite of James Brown anyway.. but to be honest the
other two couples were trying to hard. Damita was laid back and cool..she
knew she can really get down funky if she wanted to,and JB knew it too.
IMHO, this is what sets the classic SOUL TRAIN years from the ending ones.
the clothes, the hair etc. Dancers like Damita Jo, Pat, Scooby-Doo, Don
Campbell, Fred “Rerun” Berry, Jody Wately, Jeffrey Daniels and other early
dancers weren’t just dancing they were CREATING dances and it wasn’t all
sexualised w/tight spandex simulating sexual positions either.
Mr./Ms. Kentron, I am not related to Jo as I don’t know this person. I am
Kewan, the HANDSOME KID OF TRUTH with Jet-Black wavey hair (cut scalp
close). It is this TRUTH of Damita’s DUAL & BACK TO BACK championship
winnings that you HATE and apparently cannot accept.
Everyone is entitled to their own belief system as to who in their opinion
won the dance competition. However, right after that competition was
another one where Damita & Patricia collided in competition again. This
was on the ABC network as Damita danced to Billy Preston’s “Otta Space.”
This time the television audience voted & they OVERWHELMINGLY gave the
winning nod to Damita. Apparently the nation from East to West & from
North to South saw the same natural dancing talent that Don Cornelius,
James Brown & Pam Brown saw when they crowned Damita & “Scoo B. Doo” Jimmy
Foster as champions.
“Scooby Doo” Jimmy Foster was the most POWERFUL male dancer on Soul Train
back then. He and Damita knew how to synchronize and alternate the dance
“The Stop & Go!”
Thank You Donald Cortez Cornelius for using the media to carve out & show
piece The African American Community in such a positive light. Thank you
James Brown for your earlier positive acknowledgements in “Say It Loud, I’m
Black & I’m Proud.” Thank you Lamont Peterson for asking such incisive
questions of the guests on Soul Train! I could tell that when Don put the
microphone in front of you the entertainers were bracing themselves!! Job
well done Lamont!
Well Damita does “sign her movements” through exact expressive creative
language! This is the hallmark of Damita’s dancing. She is NOT
approachable. She is set apart from the pack!!
Mooser! You are right with me on this! Damita’s impromptu dance to “Super
Bad” is SUPERIOR! I also wished their were uploads on Damita when she was
in the spot light segment for her creation of the dance called “The Stop &
Go!” She created this dance which was based on the album by Hamilton
Bohannon.
Damita Jo Freeman was a much FUNKIER dancer while Patricia Davis was what I
would term as a “cutesy” dancer. The both of them, however, magnetized me
to the screen. I loved Particia & Gary Keys in the spotlight dance when
they were grooving to Johnny Taylor’s “Slow Motion!”
I went looking, and although Ms. Freeman is well and active,( as far as the
web lets me know) she has (as far as I can see) no personal website, nor is
she on Facebook. Which is one more thing to admire her for. But it is odd,
how little film or video seems to be extant of her dancing. I wish there
was more.
I thought the same thing years ago as Damita’s consistent dance contest
winnings could have inspired the Jackson 5 to record “Dancing Machine.” the
timing was really close as Michael & his brothers did appear on Soul Train
show casing Randy on the drums. After all Damita was “full of talent
self-contained tuned & channeled to your box!” The box of any D.J.!
black folks need to start dancing again. our health would improve and we
wouldn’t be so obeise. black community was heathly back then. peace and
thanks for uploading.
So, even if the song “Dancing Machine” isn’t known to be written about
Damita, it might have been! Good enough for me. Damita’s dancing always
expressed joy, intelligfence, and a combination of funk and class that
nobody else could pull off. I’ve see the clip of the Jacksons doing
“Dancing Machine” but why is there so little video of Damita dancing? I
wish there was video of Damita dancing to “Dancing Machine”! Her impromptu
dance to “Super Bad” stands alone!

I LOVE UR.CHANNEL HOMIE!!
They were all winners. Love this!!!!! Thanks so much for sharing. It’s
awesome.

This was a freakin mistake..Patricia and Gary definitely beat them..i don’t
care who disagrees either.
Personall I thought Patricia Davis and Gary Keys won.

I dont think guys can move like that these days. They either too stiff or
consider it soft..lol

Great to see each of their unique styles groovin’ to the legendary Curtis
Mayfield. 🙂

Damita also used her face as part of the dance. Her movements nearly speak.

Yes! Lamont used to ask some really good questions. Thoughtful questions.

yeah!
Scooby Doo – wow!
TV One need to do a Unsung for Damita Joe Freeman!!

Superior? I’ll say, she explicates every word with movement. Almost like
she’s signing the song with rhythm
I sometimes wonder if the song “Dancing Machine” was written about Damita
Jo Freeman, but she’s no mechanised doll. And she’s always tasteful.
So, even if the song “Dancing Machine” isn’t known to be written about

the legends of Patricia Davis & Damita Jo Freeman.
although Damita and her partner won, Patricia just moved better to me
